It leafs out in crimson red before settling into burgundy during the summer. ‘Rhode Island Red,’ however, takes all the things we love about ‘Bloodgood’ and smooshes it down into a perfectly reduced size. It leafs out as a bright red, maturing to a deeper red that holds fairly well throughout the summer. ‘Bloodgood’ is one of the most popular Japanese maples in North America, but it isn’t a dwarf tree. ‘Shaina’ performs exceptionally well for us here in the south.
